When Warner Bros. and Legendarys rebooted Godzilla released in 2014, it customary a certainly unclean response, behind the main criticism of the film physical the nonappearance of screen period for the titular monster. Contrary to what the stark difference in the two films might suggest, King of the Monsters was in no showing off a nod to Godzilla, nor did Michael Dougherty quality annoyed to up the physical factor in the sequel. As he told Polygon, he believes that the equel would have always had more monsters and more Godzilla-- even if the first film had not been criticized for lacking sufficient of those elements.
Although thats hypothetical, Michael Dougherty thinks that because you he wouldnt have wanted to repeat the same approach. The King of the Monsters director in fact liked what Gareth Edwards did behind Godzilla in making it a slow burn physical movie, but doesnt think thats a method you can use twice and certainly not put up to to back.
So Michael Dougherty felt that eschewing the slow burn entre of Godzilla was not a nod to criticism, but helpfully the natural progress of the bank account and he looked to further iconic sequels for inspiration. As he explained:
Once you have customary your monster, you habit to up the ante a little bit in the adjacent one. I used Wrath of Khan, T2, and Aliens as in fact fine references of second chapters that built upon what was customary in the first film to make a sequel that ideally is considered just as good, if not better, than the first entry.
Michael Dougherty makes a good dwindling behind his comparisons to those further iconic second chapters. You can't conceal this further Godzilla now that the audience and the characters in the film have seen him and know what he looks like. plus you have to always make the adjacent battle tougher than the last, behind stronger opponents and that leads to more monsters and the huge suit we got in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
