One of the biggest criticisms of the stop of the year film awards, and the Academy Awards specifically, is that they tend to come up with the money for awards to movies that, even though they may be good, aren't the sort of movies that most moviegoers actually care about. Apparently, the Academy of pursuit Pictures Arts and Sciences has settled to do something just about that, as this daylight they announced a number of changes to the awards, and the television push of them, start next the 2020 ceremony. Of course, that covers a lot of ground. It's far-off from exactly positive what the Academy plans to do here, in fact, it seems quite positive based upon the language in the tweet, that even the processing doesn't know quite what it's exploit yet. The wording says the category is "being designed" which means that, even though the idea must be far-off ample along that the Academy is pleasant announcing it, appropriately it probably will happen, the details may not be ironed out quite yet.
This, of course, leads to the adjacent obvious question? How does one define a "popular film?" Certainly, you can see at bin office receipts, but that's a bit more intention than the stop of the Oscar categories. If the AMPAS wanted to consent those films, it could just come up with the money for a statue to the producer of the highest grossing movie of the year. You wouldn't actually compulsion a category for it. Instead, the plan must be for something a bit more subjective, but it's anybody's guess what that would be.
While it's extremely nice that follower favorite movies may begin to be recognized, this seems next something of a can of worms. The complement of a popular movie category would, by its existence, seem to imply that there's a measurable difference with movies that are "popular" and movies that are "quality." If you are one, you must not be the other. It along with runs the risk of keeping "popular" movies out of further categories, even next deserving, even though it's not next they get in there much as it is. The business isn't that movies that do skillfully at the bin office don't get awards, it's that many of those movies are actually fine and should be considered for awards, but aren't because they have superheroes or impression aliens or a lot of special effects.
In complement to the public notice of a "popular movie" category, the Academy along with made two announcements re the actual television push of the Oscars. First, the exploit will change to an in the future February broadcast, specifically, it will expose upon Feb 9 in 2020. In recent years the exploit has aired in late February or in the future March. Second, the exploit will be limited to a "more globally accessible" three-hour broadcast. even though not specifically declared here, one has to consent that means that some of the awards currently presented upon the push may be perfect off the air.
While the Oscars tend to be slow to regulate next the times, the awards usually get re to it eventually. It will be engaging to see how these changes exploit out in the coming years.
